Most of India should remain locked down for 6-8 weeks to fight COVID-19, says health agency chief

  • There are signs that India's COVID-19 infection curve is finally flattening. The country reported about 350,000 new infections on May 12 -- significantly lower than the highs seen in the last week. However, experts have warned that it is too early to celebrate. The head of India's main health agency said most of the country should remain under lockdown for up to eight more weeks. Bodies have been washing up on the banks of the Ganges, stoking fears that the coronavirus is raging unseen in India's vast rural hinterlands, where more than two-thirds of its population lives.
