Taiwan reports 16 new domestic COVID-19 cases, may raise coronavirus alert level

  • Taiwan has been praised for its swift handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, but new local outbreaks are on the rise. It reported 16 new coronavirus infections on May 12 -- the highest number since the COVID-19 outbreak first hit the island more than a year ago. The news sent Taiwan's stock market into a free fall, plunging over 1,400 points during intraday trading -- the worst intraday fall in its history. President Tsai Ing-wen has told people not to panic.
