Suburbicon (2017) - Critics Are Saying - Paramount Pictures

  • Published on:  9/8/2017
  • Suburbicon is the talk of the town! See it in a neighborhood near you on October 27th.

Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns…the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. From director George Clooney, this is Suburbicon, starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, and Oscar Issac.

probably the best movie in Coen Brothers filmography since Burn After Reading in terms of high quirkiness for which they are well known combined with engaging cinema. The movies directed by Spielberg & Jolie were quite successful and the directorial signature is so pronounced as to not really be of the same universe as lebowski, fargo, man who wasn't there, blood simple, etc. True Grit is also a remake not even trying to be quirky. This flick would have been a modest financial success with the sub-plot of the black neighbor family removed. There were probably some heated conversations at studio about that. The crime drama itself is elegant with plenty of room for additional exposition of the characters involved in it. We know about as little about the bad guys as we do about the black family. And this movie is not a comedy in the Coen Brothers sense. this movie bombed because anyone with an expectation of being amused was going to be disappointed. It's a crime drama. It could be classed as Film Noir. as a man of African descent who grew up in the predominantly white suburban community of Hermosa Beach, Calif, spent early adulthood in Santa Cruz, Calif and late adulthood in Kihei/Wailea, Maui, i understood what co-writer & director George Clooney was trying to get at by having their plight as a backdrop to this story. It's an artistic gesture based on the fact that they are neighbors but one fits in and one doesn't. The audience doesn't get to know the black family in the same way my neighbors never got to know me. And while the overall tone of the racism seems to be displayed as down home mid-west trailer trash living in new suburban homes, and this building of actual fences, blasting stereos, sitting on the roof, etc., is *entirely* believable (my own stories would make a better movie than this.) This movie is of massive gravitas and makes a loud statement about white American racism that rings too true to be amusing or enjoyable unless you're somebody like me whose life experience is already that of those people on the other side of the fence, wondering who YOU are. This movies says : "guess who YOU are?" I thank Clooney on a personal level for fighting for this movie, which i think may have better luck on DVD but for the love of all that is Lebowski, don't promote this as comedy, folks. i would favorably compare it to Fargo or Man Who Was Not There but the humor is even drier and the crime more deeply shocking and affecting.

the movie sucks, Clooney sucks, Damon sucks, its a big waste of money and without needing to do so (the neighbors have nothing to do with the story line), it stirs up racial tension between blacks and whites.

Fuck this movie! It's boring. Also, George Clooney is a baaaad director. Don't waste your money, it doesn't deserve your time.
