  • Last season was a trying campaign for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers missed the playoffs and grabbed headlines for all of the wrong reasons. Two of the franchise's most talented players will be playing for new teams in 2019 but the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2019 NFL Draft Class suggests that head coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert have not only turned the page on yester-year but have placed an emphasis on rehabilitating the culture in the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room. Winning would go a long way to rectifying what ails the Steelers and they took a big step in the right direction trading up ten spots in the first round of the draft to select CPGM Headley favorite, linebacker Devin Bush out of Michigan. Bush possesses a similar skill-set to Ryan Shazier, but its his leadership and football IQ that are exactly what the Steelers have been missing in the middle of their defense. The rest of the Steelers draft picks included a pair of third round picks WR Diontae Johnson and CB Justin Layne. Layne's length and competitiveness could help him get on the field sooner rather than later and the Steelers have made a habit of finding excellent receivers on Day 2 and Day 3 of the NFL Draft. In the fourth and fifth rounds the Steelers added running back Benny Snell out of Kentucky and tight end Zach Gentry out of Michigan respectively. Snell represents a tough nosed, physical player, with tremendous intangibles and leadership qualities furthering the Steelers concerted effort to add "character" to their roster. A trio of 6th round draft picks netted the Steelers a pair of linebackers in Sutton Smith and Ulysees Gilbert providing much needed depth at perhaps the most important position group on Pittsburgh defense; and defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs from Alabama who should slide right in behind the likes of Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt up front. With their final draft pick in the 2019 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers selected offensive lineman Derwin Gray to add depth to the offensive line in response to (in part) the Marcus Gilbert trade earlier in the offseason. Overall it was a classic Pittsburgh Steelers draft, reflecting an impact player of the defensive side of the ball early and look to the future throughout the rest of the draft class.
